Customer Service and Support in Any Weather

Wow! Like ice and temperatures below 20F aren't enough! This morning the power went out and I had no idea when it would be back. This meant no heat, no internet, no computer, and for us, no land line.

We use TimeWarner cable service for our phone. It runs on a modem that is supposed to have battery backup. I bet you already know what happened.

I was unable to get through to the power company via cell phone but the spousal unit had made it to work and got the tickets for both power company and Time Warner started from his end. That was all on an automated system. However, when we tried to call Time Warner back later, nobody in customer service was answering the phones. Not even a recording!

And you know, I understand that they are overwhelmed with people calling because of weather related outages, but this weather was expected for several days. I would have thought some backup would have been brought in or that more phone capacity would have been put onboard. I guess not.

I think we are going to discuss the possibility of changing carriers. I don't care if the power goes out, but when the landline is dead, that is when I start to fret. I have been caught with an unusable cell phone because the towers were overloaded, but you could always count on your landline....until now.

Do you have a way of being there for your customers no matter what?

Luckily the cell phone worked although the first time I tried, the towers were overloaded and I couldn't get a call out right away.

My issue is primarily one of the actions of the cable service. The cable modem powering the phone should have had battery backup but it failed. Had this been an emergency situation, I would have been out of luck without a cell phone.Even with the cell, I was unable to get through to the cable service that handles my phone service.

The only apparent way to fix it is to get a new modem with a, hopefully, functional battery backup. This is definitely something to keep in mind, not just for phone but for any other system that may be needed...what are its weak spots and how will the company that supports it guarantee up-time?

And while it is likely local customers might understand, as a business owner, I would not want to make them have to take that position. There are too many competitors. Customers, even loyal ones, don't have to stick with you and won't.
